Subiaco AFC (Juniors & SSF) - Grading Sessions

Details of the Grading Process

Grading Days
Subiaco AFC (Juniors & SSF) conducts a grading process for players that are U8 and older. This exercise is designed to ensure that every player is placed in the most suitable team.

Each player’s competencies will be assessed at pre-season grading sessions.

The Head Coach, assisted by the Coordinator of the relevant age group and other Coaches, will manage the grading sessions, in order to determine team selections. Parents are encouraged to observe from a distance.

The dominant criteria in the grading process are player competence, determination and enthusiasm. Consideration is also given to height, strength, fitness, personality, availability of team places, requests and any other factor the Head Coach and Coordinator deem reasonable.

Playing Up
Occasionally, advanced players may be encouraged to play in in the year above his/her age group (by birth). The Head Coach, who holds the absolute discretion with this decision, recommends this only after careful consideration.

Players should attend grading sessions in accordance with their birth year unless otherwise advised by the Coordinator.

Mobility
Team selection at the pre-season grading sessions is just the beginning; a player is not locked in to the same team for the season. In fact, Subiaco AFC (Juniors & SSF) encourages player mobility. Often, players will experience games in other teams within their age group and in exceptional circumstances, an older age group.

To assist mobility, teams within the same age group, or one year apart, are encouraged to train together periodically.

Skills training sessions are offered regularly throughout the season. These sessions are designed to cater for multiple age groups within the same session. This enables the Head Coach to observe a broad range of players and identify those that are performing in a manner that warrants attention to their current team placement.

Where players have strived to achieve a higher standard, or struggle to cope with their existing standard, coaches work cohesively to ensure all players are, when required, re-allocated to a team in which the standard of play is congruent with the player’s competence.
